Alec Newman made an indelible impression on Tallulah this past Summer. We spent some time with him when he was here in New York playing Edmund in King Lear at Brooklyn Academy of Music with Derek Jacobi in the title role. An instant crush developed-understandably-and a seed was sewn as soon as Alec brought Tallulah onto the main stage at BAM! She was in awe of the mechanics that went on behind the scenes and tip toeing past the sleeping Derek Jacobi-he famously turns up hours before a performance- she got to try on both his and Cordelia’s crowns! INCREDIBLE! I’ve seen quite a few Shakespeare plays but astonishingly had never seen King Lear-Michael Grandage’s production was a highlight for me! I loved Alec’s performance of Edmund (he’s recently been nominated by The National Television Awards- Best Actor in a Drama for the BBC series Waterloo Road) and Derek Jacobi had me in tears-twice! Listening to the actors being interviewed after the performance -how incredibly funny and down to earth they were-I really started missing England (home to me for 16 years!) and was plotting my way back- to have Tallulah grow up a proper English Tallulah ROSE! But she’s a New Yorker-a Brooklyn girl and as Alec kept reminding me-BAM is HER theatre! On leaving we joked that we would see eachother back here in 30 years time with Alec as Lear and Tallulah as his CORDELIA!
